Making the most of your website when business is quiet

The festive season and the start of a new year can often bring a lull in business activity for some small businesses. But rather than viewing this as a slowdown, it can be seen as an opportunity: a chance to refine, test and prepare your website to attract more enquiries and sales for now and when your busy period returns. Here are some ideas on how you can make the most of these quieter times.

Adopt a scientific approach

One of the most effective ways to improve your website’s performance is to think like a scientist. Instead of making gut-based decisions, use data and test hypotheses to understand what really drives your visitors to convert. For example, ask yourself: Why aren’t visitors filling out my enquiry form? Does moving testimonials higher on the page increase trust?

Tools like heatmaps, session recordings and A/B testing that we discussed in a recent blog post, can reveal what’s working and what isn’t. You can run small experiments such as testing different headlines, button placements or forms to optimise your site for conversions, constantly monitoring what visitors are doing.

Refresh your content

A fresh, relevant website encourages visitors to engage. Review your homepage, service pages and blog content to ensure they are aligned with your business today. Consider updating images to high-quality photos and adding new testimonials or success stories.

Research has found that ensuring your website’s design is mobile-friendly and fast-loading can be key factors in delivering excellent customer service. A smooth, intuitive experience shows respect for your visitors’ time and builds trust.

Optimise blog posts for search and engagement

Well-written, relevant blog posts can attract new visitors and establish your authority in your niche. During quieter times, it can be worth review your existing blog content to ensure it’s up to date, relevant and optimised for SEO. Consider creating new posts that answer common customer questions or showcase your expertise.

Remember to make your posts scannable, use descriptive subheadings, include images with proper alt text and aim for a length that provides real value rather than waffling on.
