Benefits of a Simple Website Navigation System

Designing a website is not all about the awesome graphics, photos or even the bells and whistles of forms and scripts.

Of course content is at the core of any site – but with a poorly designed website navigation system,  your visitor may just give up hunting for  the content they really want and move on to the next website.

Consider the flow of your site and beware of putting in too many links. Remember that the fewer clicks a visitor needs to do, the better.

Before programming your website, it is best to sit down and properly plan on how you intend to categorize the content in your site.

• Create your main menu taking care to you minimize the number of sub-menus.

• Clearly define what content each sub-menu will hold. Avoid fancy words or wordy phrases like “What do we do” when you can just say “About ”

• Give simple and easy to understand titles for each menu, sub-menu, and so on and so forth. A video tutorial can also be helpful to visitors.

• Aid the viewer when choosing the right link by highlighting the selected hyperlink.

• Make use of clear and easy to understand fonts. Don’t use too many different fonts on one page.  Limit yourself to a maximum of three different fonts in a single page.

Remember that the on-line reader has a short attention span.  It is best to design your website in such a way that content can be accessed via no more than three mouse clicks or links.
