How The Right Web Name Can Improve Your Business
We all know how important a web site is these days, but many people do not realise the value of having the right name for their website. It’s easy to pick up a cheap domain name, but choose poorly and it could harm your business’s internet presence. The internet – and search engines in particular – are the Yellow Pages of the 21st Century, and your visibility online is a key part of attracting new business and giving customers confidence in your company.
What Should It Say At The End?
A whole host of ‘domain name’ endings are available: from the well-known .com and .co.uk through to less common ones, such as .org, .gov and .edu. There are also a lot of newer domain names, often available free or very cheaply, such as .tk and .tv. It is, however, a good idea to stick with .com and .co.uk for a couple of reasons:
- Customers are used to .com, and .co.uk – this helps them understand you are a British website
- Customers trust .com and .co.uk more than the other, less familiar domain names
It is also a good idea – if you can – to purchase both the .com and .co.uk versions of your web name in case customers type the wrong one.
Descriptive Is Good
Customers will struggle to find your business online or may even confuse you with your competitors if the name does not reflect your business name; if it is very similar to another website name; or if it is difficult to spell. Wherever possible, your name should be unique and linked to the kind of searches your customers might make: Hullweddingcakes.co.uk may be much more effective than Cakesbyhelen.co.uk as it has the location and a description built in.
Take some time to choose a domain name that’s right for your business, in association with your website builder, and it could be the key to making your website a roaring success.
